Insurance benefit for DHOAS-eligible members
Economical home and contents insurance is now available to current and former ADF members who are eligible under the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme (DHOAS).
Eligible members of both the Permanent Forces and the Reserves are able to access the Defence Service Homes Insurance Scheme (DSHIS) as an additional benefit following recent amendments to the Defence Service Homes Act 1918.
DSHIS is a Commonwealth Government initiative run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It has been providing home insurance benefits to veterans and eligible ADF personnel for over 90 years.
Members do not have to hold a DHOAS subsidy certificate or home loan to access the insurance cover, they need only to meet the eligibility requirements of DHOAS.
The extension of the insurance scheme creates an additional benefit for ADF members, and is intended to complement the home loan subsidy provided by DHOAS.
It is not a requirement for members to take out insurance with DSHI to participate in DHOAS.
House and Contents insurance cover
DSHIS offers both home and contents insurance. The cover represents good value, and policyholders can purchase cover for any home they own, including holiday and rental homes.
The scheme provides a broad house insurance cover that includes flood as well as storm damage to fences. This cover is not usually included under home insurance policies. Accidental damage up to $5000 is also automatically included.
DSHIS also offers contents insurance through QBE (Australia). The policy includes an optional accidental damage extension for contents in the home.
Recent additions to DSHI's policy portfolio include Travel and CTP (for NSW and Queensland only).
